The Principal diagnosis for diabetic patients is generally not a diabetic code. The ACMI program looks for a diabetic code anywhere in the record (incidence) to select all diabetic patients.
In the 500000 sample Medicare inpatient records, there are 121171 patients with a diabetic code ('25000' through '25093') in one of their diagnosis fields. There is no diabetic principal diagnosis in the top 10 principal diagnoses with the most bed days.
There are 34145 patients in the top 10 diagnosis codes with the most bed days out of 121171 diabetic patients.
